GLASGOW — Two stunning strikes from Kris Commons helped Celtic to a 2-0 win over Hamilton on Saturday that extends their lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League to eight points.
The Hoops appeared to be suffering from a hangover from their explosive midweek Old Firm win in the first-half with a below par performance until a superb 20-yard shot from Commons gave them the lead in the 42nd minute.
The Scotland international was gifted a second just seven minutes after the break when he took advantage of a slack back pass from David Elebert to slam home from just inside the box.
The win piles the pressure on rivals Rangers, albeit they have played three games less, who are away to St Mirren on Sunday
Johan Mjallby said his side lacked energy.
"You are always a bit nervous how the team is going to react when they put so much into the Old Firm game," the Celtic assistant manager said.
In the end when we got the first goal we settled a bit more. I think they were professional and the main thing is the three points."
Billy Reid thought the goal just before half-time was a sucker punch to his side's chances.
"I think a lot of people expected an avalanche of goals but it never looked like that," the Hamilton manager said.
"I think we were set up really well but we gave away the second goal and it was a disaster for us.
Celtic made two changes from their midweek win over Rangers as Anthony Stokes replaced the injured Gary Hooper while Fraser Forster returned from suspension.
