Fashion: Forever Evolving

Edited by Collette Osuna of Statements in Fashion

Hello everyone! I'm super excited to be making my debut as an IFB Links a la Mode Editor this week. As I visited each link, I was reminded that each had the exact thing in common with the next, that Fashion is Forever Evolving.

From  your Mothers fashion advice, a beauty "how to" video, or a legendary  icons passing, fashion is always changing and taking form in a new  shape. I am constantly thriving to acquaint myself with the "fashion unfamiliar." This weeks links did just that for me. I'm thrilled to be a new member of the IFB family and cannot wait to see everyone's posts throughout the upcoming year!

Pourquoi Pas?

{weheartit}

Why not keep on believing my loves? I have been job searching lately which warrants its fair share of ups and downs...especially when the fashionable industry you are dying to be in is a bit closed door. I, like everyone, have hit my points where I can no longer keep myself upbeat, but 90% of the time, I'm optimistic that my amazing opportunity is right around the corner. So I skip from coffee rendez-vous to networking event basking in the glory of New York City and feeling satisfied that at least I know I am home and in the right place.

Monday I had a coffee with a new friend who shared some rejuvenating words that caught me off guard...
No matter where you are in life, if you only focus on your impossible circumstances you are bound to sink. If you keep your head up and your eyes on your goal, you have no other choice but to keep on stepping and arrive at your destination. Its in the doubting, the questioning, the focusing on the negatives that the road gets impossible.
As a planner, be it events or life, the hardest thing for me to do is let go and trust God will provide. And even though I have been provided for time and time again, I still worry. So I'm glad that when I struggle with the calm of knowing everything will work out, I have great friends to be that constant reminder of trust and patience and faith.

UK Inspiration Topshop Style

I love living in New York for one main reason (among many) it has EVERYTHING! When running errands last week around SoHo I stopped in the hip UK store Topshop...you know...to see what all the fuss was about. I must say I was pleased. Although not everything was quite my style, there were plenty of pieces, staple and flair, that I loved and wanted immediately for Spring...if it ever comes!

Holland Recap #2

Day #2

Feyenoord

On our second day in Holland we visited Feyenoord.  This is one of the top Dutch Clubs in Holland.  They have produced many players including Dutch International Robin Van Persie.

We arrived to Feyenoord early in the morning so that we could catch the First Team Training.  We watched the First Team train with the Stadium in the background and it was very cool to see world class players train 10 yards from us.  One player in particular who trained that day was Ryo Miyaichi.  He is currently on loan from Arsenal and he was very impressive.  One of the drills we observed was a tight 5v3 possesion drill and Ryo had very quick feet.  Toward the end of training, he was hitting free kicks with perfection.

Feyenoord currently sits 12th in the Eredivisie.  PSV, who we also visited on this trip, sits top of the table with 61 points.

After watching the First Team Training, we went and had lunch in the stadium cafe.  At lunch, we met up with Kipp Keller and Kip Thompson who were in England before they arrived in Holland.  They saw Wayne Rooney's masterclass bicycle kick at Old Trafford.  I was very jealous that they were in the stadium to see that goal.

After lunch, we observed some of the Feyenoord youth teams train.  The coolest part of the training was that the players could see the stadium in the background of the training pitch.  It was as if they knew that they were training to someday play in the main stadium.

After Feyenoord, we visited RKTVC Tiel which is an amateur club in Holland.  The director of this amateur club was Niels Botch.  He was a very impressive guy who told us all about their club.

RKTVC Tiel has 560 youth players in their program which is 49 teams with 55 coaches (18 pro coaches).  The club is carried by its volunteers and the goal is to have fun and to have good competition.

The club has implemented a program which tracks every player.  It helps rate stamina, physique, discipline, technique, speed of passing and receiving, ball possession, and 1v1 duals.  The players receive evaluations 2x per year.  Different coaches will track and evaluate the players.

It was interesting to note that club puts a huge emphasis on discipline.  Everyone including coaches, players, and volunteers are required to be clean and neat.  This includes being polite, listening, and addressing each other with respect.

It was also interesting to note that the club bar helps fund the club in many different aspects.

As with every other club in Holland, RKTVC Tiel implements a 4-3-3 system of play.

I have included some pictures of our second day in Holland.

Fashionspiration: Alexander McQueen Does it Again

As I shopped Fifth Avenue yesterday to try and forget the fact that New York is STILL cold, I was stunned by Alexander McQueen...as always. I road the escalator up to Shoe Mecca at Begdorf Goodman, where the receptionist is Christian Louboutin, the manager is Jimmy Choo, Sales Lead Fendi, and Creative Director Manolo Blahnik!

As I circled the floor (and every other) in a fashion daze, I was in awe of a masterpiece. Alexander McQueen has a shoe on the market that is like taking sculpture for a walk! Can you believe the artistry that has gone into this creation? I must say I grow more and more enamored with Alexander McQueen with every passing season. And although I may wonder the wearability of such a shoe...I must tip my hat to this nod to true artistry. Bravo!

On the Street....Angelika, Milan

I saw this young lady in Milan several times this past season. She is one of the crop of new bloggers. (Read her blog here.) I loved that she's a bigger, curvier girl than most of the other bloggers who you see in the press and tend to represent the genre.

The subtle thing she achieves so successfully in these two looks is to complement the sturdy but beautiful shape of her legs with an equally strong shoe. A daintier shoe would be overpowered but these shoes create a beautiful harmony for the lower half of her body.

Tomorrow I'll post an image of a different young lady I met in Paris with a similarly curvy body type but a different method of creating body harmony.

UPDATE

I love a post like this. It creates a real and important conversation.

A number of the commenters are upset by the word "curvy." They feel I should have used the word "normal." However, normal is relative. There is a young lady on my team who is 5'0", and another who is 5'9". Which would be "normal"?

Look at the man walking across the street in the first image, and the height of the umbrella in the second - and Angelika relative to each. This girl is taller than most, and has the bearing to match. Regarding the curves...just because you don't see them does not mean they are not there. Is there a minimum degree of curviness to be considered "curvy"?

Remember, curvy is a body shape, not a weight. To be honest, you can't really see in these photographs most of the curves - chest, stomach, hip - this woman has.

I get emails all the time from self-professed curvy girls who want to see representations of their size on the site. What sucks is that when I try to put a photograph up to talk about these issues, the post is hijacked over the political correctness of the words.

So help me understand; what is the modern way to speak about size? I'm not married to the word curvy. I'm just trying to describe her in the best way I know how. Let's not hide from this issue; I don't want to be afraid to talk about it on my blog. Help me describe this young lady without using the word "normal," but in a way that addresses her body size and still references my point about the size of her legs relative to her shoes.

Last week I did a post of older women every day, and I was proud of that. I am proud to be a blog that is showing women of different sizes. I don't want to lose the potential power of the post by being caught up in wordplay.
