Liverpool vs Manchester United Preview
Manchester United travel to Anfield on Sunday looking to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to six points.
The greatest rivalry in British football and arguably the most important game of the season for both clubs, has all the ingredients to be a classic.
Liverpool have been rejuvenated since the comeback of Kenny Dalglish as manager, who has Andy Carroll available to make his debut tomorrow however he may wish to use him.
Dalglish has not confirmed whether or not Carroll will start for Liverpool with the Scotsman possibly tempted to pair him alongside Luis Suarez for the first time.
The game may also see veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs break yet another record for United, as he is set to beat Sir Bobby Charlton’s all time appearance record for the club.
Sir Alex Ferguson will be without his trusted defensive duo of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, so Johnny Evans or Wes Brown are expected to partner Chris Smalling in central defence.
Sir Alex Ferguson has picked the same side for the last two Premiership encounters against Wigan and Chelsea, he is however expected to name a changed side for the visit to Anfield.
Ferguson may opt to play Berbatov or Rooney as a lone striker, with the latter also providing an option of playing on the left. It is unaware whether former Liverpool striker Michael Owen will be fit to travel to his former club.
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has a fully fit squad to choose from, with all eyes on whether or not he will start with £35 million striker Andy Carrol from the beginning.
Joe Cole and Maxi Rodriguez are battling for a starting place on the wing. Dalglish has stated his belief in Cole and may look at the game as the perfect kick start to Cole’s career.
Liverpool are still mathematically capable of qualifying for the Champions League, but whether or not they can achieve that, they will be out to dent United’s title hopes for sure.
With Arsenal failing to close the gap on United and with cup encounters against Barcelona and United looming in the next week, Ferguson’s side can swing the ball favorably back in their court with a victory at Anfield on Sunday.
In a week which saw two fiery Scotsman argue in a near touchline brawl, we may see another fiery encounter at Anfield when these two sides meet.
However, dont expect to see these two Scotsmen going head to head.
Kick off at Anfield is at 13:30.
