Life Turning Pages

It's funny how life unfolds before your eyes. How it changes. How it changes you. As a child, life is all about the future, what you will study, what you will grow up to be. The older you get the more you live by memories rather than plans. Rather than everything being new, everything has a memory attached to it. I wonder if the twenties are the only time you truly live in the present? You are finally living out everything your life has acculminated to thusfar and it's still only about you. You're not teaching memories and old lessons to your children or worried now about their future. You're not old enough yet to worry too much about your future of retirement. You can just live in the moment... Or at least I sure hope you do.

Cool Girls on Motorcycles, Vintage Photo Contest

This is a photo of my Great-uncle Frank's former girlfriend taken in the early 1930s on my Great grandfather's ranch in Sun Valley, CA. I "borrowed" this photo from my Grandpa about 5 years ago so I could take it to my hair stylist for inspiration for a new haircut. I don't know anything about this woman other than she dated a family member and she liked to ride motorcycles, my Grandpa was only about 7 around this time so he doesn't remember much about her. Still I love this picture and everything the girl on the bike embodies.
I’m used to walk in the small markets of antique dealers and I found this pictures.
I paid attention to it as I liked the woman personality, riding the bike in an unusual or not so femenin way for the times it was done, but at the same time because she appears kind of “daring” style.

Contest Update

Thanks to everyone that submitted a photo for the contest!

I thought we might get a few hundred entries but we ended up with over 2,200 submissions.

We've all enjoyed the images and related stories. No matter who gets the book I think we were all winners.

If you like, continue to send vintage photos to this email address sartorialistcontest@gmail.com (and only to that email address)

I still have quite a few images that I will be posting occasionally over the next few weeks.

Because of the huge response to the contest it will take me a week or so to sort through all of emails myself. I plan to announce a winner next week.

Can you guess what the next contest will be?

Which team will IPL 2010

As we all know that IPL have reached at that stage from where we can see the strong contender of this year's IPL.

So far Mumbai Indians are really looking strong and crushing their opponents without any mercy.

Sachin Tendulkar is in great form and enjoying this format of game very well with hitting ground boundaries instead of aerial boundaries.

So far the main strength of Mumbai Indians is Sachin Tendulkar and their bowling attack.

My Vote is going towards Mumbai Indians.

I love reading compliments of Sachin Tendulkar

I simply love reading good things about Sachin Tendulkar. After every match of IPL in which he played good innings I bouugh newspaper of second day and read what other people says about him.

That is the magic of this champion. Remember how he cherished after taking catch of Adam Gilchrist. No one will believe that this player have played 20 years of cricket and still he is hungry for more and more.

The Family Portraits, Vintage Photo Contest

The date is January 3, 1954. Pictured in the center is my grandfather Yukio (known to me as Ji-chan, Japanese for Grandpa). My dad (pictured on left) is 9 here, his brother a couple years older. The three of them are getting ready to leave Japan for the first time and emigrate to California. My Japanese-American grandmother (born/raised in Calif.) had earlier left her family in Japan in order to find a job, a place to live, and get settled here. Then she sent over for her husband and kids to come and join her in the States.

This photo of Ji-chan reminds me of a Japanese Indiana Jones with the leather jacket and fedora, ready to go on an adventure in a far-off land. He always looked sharp when he went out.

Ji-chan was always a bit of a mystery to me as there was a language barrier (he spoke only Japanese) and he was a quiet man. But I really loved him. He would sneak behind my grandmother's back and smoke cigarettes in the garage or in the car. I'd always laugh at him becuase it was so obvious. He would awe me with his yo-yo tricks. When I was little I'd hold his hands and he would let me step on his toes while he'd walk around the house. And he was a highly regarded gardener in the Japanese community and won awards for his amazing bonsai plants. He was in his backyard garden, sitting at a chair next to a little table tending to one of his mini-tress when he passed away when I was 14. When my grandmother discovered him she thought that he was simply taking a nap because he looked so peaceful.

When I saw the pictures of my graceful compatriot on your site, I felt the urge to send some of my most cherished family photos too, those of my paternal grandmother Theresa Moreira Reis. She was born in 1903 in Recife, Northern Brazil, daughter to the city's most sought-after tailor. Politicians and other affluent people were part of his clientele, and her father's work influenced her sense of style throughout her life. Grandma Theresa was congenitally chic, and unpretentiously glamorous before fashion was in fashion. Her European taste in dressing must have made her stand out there and then.

For me, this shot is all about wearing color in a bland colorless city.

Look how she explodes out of the background griege of it all.

Again I don't really think this is about these specific clothes but about the idea of color in a black and white world.

A jilbab comes in various styles

A jilbab comes in various styles, colours and designs which when combined form a unique fashion. A jilbab does not have to be a piece of cloth that is stitched for you to wear but it can look good too. We can make our own fashion with the jilbab. There are now new designs that a jilbab comes in and that is fashion for muslim women. We get hijabs to match it and that completes our fashion as a modern muslim woman. We can now get a designer jilbab, sporty jilbab, casual jilbab, a jilbab for wedding and also a fashion jilbab. There are different colours in which a jilbab comes in and some are good for summer while other for winter. For example, black and grey in a jilbab are good colours for winter while peach and sky blue are good for summer.

Fashion is a term that usually applies to a person that is often wearing the clothes that are of the fashion or style of the time. We make our own fashion whether it is for a jilbab or a hijab or both. A jilbab that covers you fully, is comfortable and has a style to it is the perfect one in fashion. A jilbab that caters for different body shapes and fashion preferences is the beat one. An individuals taste matters too. One might prefer the sporty jilbab and say that, that is fashion for them while the other person could say that the casual jilbab is fashion for them. In fact they are all in fashion but it depends on the occasion you are wearing them for. Every jilbab and fashion has a time and place. In conclusion a jilbab with style is the jilbab in fashion.

Curl-tastic Giveaway

Let me share with you something, I have curly, thick, long hair and by 23, I thought I had pretty much gotten it under control. Then I moved to France...and it hasn't curled properly in 6 months!

Do you have curly hair? Have you struggled with maintaining it all your life? I do and I have, and I am here to present to you, your solution! Ladies, presenting: DevaFuser. When I heard about this product, I was so intrigued because the design is so original, (and the founder herself has very curly hair) so it perked my interest. Of course after over 2 decades of being promised things for my difficult hair and only being disappointed, I had my doubts. Well the lovely people at Devachan Salons in New York City stand behind their product and dared me to try it...and guess what? IT'S AWESOME! It is hands down the best diffuser I have ever used and it makes my curls look wonderful. I was so excited. But this isn't only an answer to my problems, one lucky (and curly) Embellisher gets to win one of these babies for herself!

WHAT HAPPENED?
In 1988, the Deva line evolved from Lorraine Massey mixing botanical ingredients to find a solution for her own curly hair, her intent was never to revolutionize the curly hair world, but yet that is what DevaCurl is certainly doing.

WHAT IS IT?
The DevaFuser’s innovative hand-shape design fits easily underneath curls and uses 360-degree airflow to dry hair from the inside out. Conventional diffusers only allowed the hair to be dried on the surface, creating frizz on the top and leaving hair wet underneath. The DevaFuser gently dries the hair without creating frizz or disturbing the natural curl formation, According to its innovator, Denis DaSilva, using the DevaFuser is simple, “Just attach the DevaFuser to your hairdryer using the Universal Adapter.

Next, gently guide the DevaFuser onto the scalp at the nape, forehead, and temple regions, holding it for two minutes at each position to set the curl. The 360-degree airflow means you no longer have to move the diffuser around. You simply hold the DevaFuser in a couple of places and you have fabulous, frizz-free curls!.” Until now, people with curls had limited options for effectively styling and drying their hair. “Air drying” meant waiting hours until their hair felt dry and even then frizz and limp curls were frequent problems. The use of conventional diffusers often resulted in a dry, frizzy, hard-to-manage “scare-do.” Now, as long as people with curls have a blow dryer, the DevaFuser lets them look forward to a head full of bouncy, beautiful curls.

WHAT ELSE DOES DEVA OFFER?
Depart from the ordinary with this botanically drenched, 100% sulfate free, curl care system. DevaCurl took the “poo” out of shampoo by removing the harsh, dehydrating detergents found in conventional shampoos. Whether your hair is curly, wavy or chemically dehydrated, there’s a DevaCurl product that is right for you. Choose from DevaCurl or DevaCare and enjoy the benefits of shiny, manageable, frizz free curls. With DevaCurl, curly hair is not a trend…it’s a lifestyle.

"You can combat any curly hair conundrum when you embrace your natural hair texture" is the motto Massey lives by that has gotten her here today. From the gentle cleansers and hydrating conditioners, through the complete range of styling products any curly girl who chooses the right combination from the 14 different selections, will become a true believer.

Bottom line: I used it. I loved it. My life has changed...well my hair routine anyway!
